You come home from a Sunday market with a bowl that still shows the tree it came from, and you want to know how it was made. Woodturning is the craft of using a wood lathe with hand-held tools to cut a shape that stays symmetrical around its axis of rotation, and that vocabulary is what lets you look at a market bowl with a clearer eye.

What the turner actually does

The operator is known as a turner, and the older name for the skill is turnery. Like a potter at a wheel, the turner spins the wood and brings a tool to it by hand. There is no fixed contact point that carries the tool for you. That freehand control is what sets the wood lathe apart from the metalworking lathe used by machinists, where cutters are held and advanced mechanically. If you watch hands at work at a market demonstration, you see the difference at once. The tool rests on a support, leans lightly against the body, then meets the spinning surface to lift a thin shaving.

A bowl, a chair leg and a pen from the same machine

It adds legs, spindles and pegs for furniture, balusters and newel posts for architecture, baseball bats, urns and sculptures, hollow forms such as woodwind instruments, plus bowls, platters and chair seats. Industrial production has taken over many of these goods, yet the lathe remains in use for limited runs and custom orders. A skilled worker can make a wide range of items with five or six simple tools, reshaped as the task changes. In many places the lathe stayed portable, carried to the wood source or set up in a temporary shop. That is why you still find turned work beside farm food at a Belgrade Lakes Sunday Market Guide and Season Calendar, where small-batch goods fit the day.

Why does grain direction change the cut?

Wood grain decides how the tool behaves. In spindle turning the grain runs lengthwise along the bed, as if a log lay between the centers, so the grain meets the rotation at a right angle under the tool. In bowl turning the grain runs across the axis, as if a plank lay across the chuck, so the angle between grain and edge keeps changing as the blank spins. Twice each turn the tool meets end grain and even cuts upward across it. That shifting angle rules out some tools and demands more skill. Dry wood suits lids, boxes and glued-up forms that must keep their size. Wetter wood cuts cleanly in a soft ribbon with little dust, then it moves while it dries and shrinks less along the grain, which can leave what looks like an oval bowl and can bring out figure in the wood.

Hard roots and plain pine ask for different edges

Turners choose different edges for hardwoods and ivory from those for softwoods. Holes in the stock call for higher speed, fillers or added care. Where other woodworkers prize tight, straight grain, turners often hunt for roots, defects or diseased sections because the pattern rewards the risk. If you pick up a market bowl with uneven color or a small filled void, you are holding that choice.

Bow, pole and treadle before electric power

Lathes work either with reciprocating motion or with continuous revolution. A bow or a spring drives the reciprocating type first one way and then the other, and the cut happens on one side of the swing, as on a pole lathe or a bow lathe. The method is old and demands dexterity, yet skilled hands get fine work from it, including beads for Arabian lattice windows called Meshrebeeyeh that caught the eye of Holtzapffel in the 1880s. Continuous revolution can come from a treadle wheel, water, steam or electric power, and it removes the pause of the return stroke. Even then the turner guides contact by hand. Learning the craft of woodturning in this longer form helps when you compare a light pole-lathe bowl with a heavier electric-lathe vessel.

Cups for everyday use and a mazer for display

Wood rots, so the early record survives mostly in pictures and in pieces preserved in wet ground. Egyptian monuments show a helper pulling a strap to spin the work while another person cuts, and early bow and strap lathes developed in Egypt and Rome, with versions among Chinese, Persian and Arab workers. Some early workers steadied tools with bare feet while their hands powered the lathe. Between 500 and 1500, turned wooden vessels served as everyday bowls and cups across much of Europe, and our examples come from shipwrecks such as the Mary Rose, from the Oseberg burial ship capped with clay, from deep wells and waterlogged pits, and from seventh-century bowls linked to the island monastery of Iona off western Scotland. Much of that ware was turned green on a spring-pole lathe. A far rarer drinking vessel, the mazer, was made from dry wood in small numbers and dressed with a silver-gilt rim and boss, such as the Robert Chalker Mazer in Britain dated 1480 to 1500, with an engraved Trinity and the inscription ROBERT CHALKER IESUS.

From crank wheel to queen of machine tools

By 1568 a separate flywheel drove a lathe through a belt, with a master cutting while an apprentice turned a large wheel. That steady rotation opened the way to water, steam and electric drive, and the lathe grew into what the page calls the queen of machine tools because it could turn parts for other machines. The Holtzapffels built ornamental lathes from that base with metalworking ideas such as the automatic slide rest, cutting patterned work in hardwoods such as ebony. European princes kept such lathes as a hobby, a fashion noted by Tolstoy in War and Peace in 1869. In London, woodturners gathered on Wood Street by 1310, took charge of weights and measures under the mayor by 1347, built their own Hall by 1591 and were incorporated as the Worshipful Company of Turners of London in 1604. Beyond London the trade stayed scattered, with itinerant Bodgers raising pole lathes near timber to turn chair parts.

How did a hobby revival keep the lathe turning?

In nineteenth- and early twentieth-century England much of the trade worked in turning shops under masters and apprentices, while in Germany and Russia villages specialized, sometimes in toys. Bow- and pole lathes stayed in service for one-person shops making bowls and house parts in many regions. In the United States the craft entered public schools through industrial arts, often before furniture-making, with set tasks such as gavels, darning eggs, boxes, trays, candlesticks, lamps and furniture legs. Patternmakers also used large, slow lathes and scraping tools to shape foundry molds with care. Then in the 1970s hobby interest rose sharply across the English-speaking world. Dr. Dale Nish traveled to England to learn from apprentice-trained turners and bring back teachers, tools and methods. Canadian Stephen Hogbin spent a year in Australia testing scale and design. Shop teachers ran seminars, wrote books and backed research, toolmakers found buyers for lathes and cutters, and collectors bought more sculptural pieces. The craft rarely entered university art and design departments. It grew instead through demonstrations, private lessons, club meetings, journals and online video, including many DIY publications and YouTube lessons. The Center for Art in Wood, founded in 1986 as The Wood Turning Center, now holds more than 1,000 objects by international artists in Philadelphia, with a research library and gallery.

Five cuts and three points of contact

Complex shapes come from few cuts. Parting frees the wood from its holder or sets depth. Planing uses a bevel below the edge to support fibers, much as a joiner's plane does. Beads rise convex from the cylinder and coves fall concave into it. Hollowing joins drilling and scooping. The turner may choose among tools for each move, and clean cuts improve with practice. Every cut rests on three contacts. The tool presses on the rest, against the body, then on the wood surface, often with the bevel riding the work so the spinning wood meets the edge and leaves a thin shaving without tearing. Turners favor a clean finish straight from the tool to shorten sanding. When sanding is needed, they sand on the lathe with paper in hand, with an inertial sander that turns with the work, or with drills and right-angle drills. The lathe then serves as a holder for carving, burning, texturing, coloring and finishing.

How the wood is held while it spins

The wood turns between a headstock with the drive and a tailstock support that spins only if its center is live or held in a rotating device. Points or spurs can bite into the ends for work between centers. The headstock spindle can also grip with a cup, collet or scroll chuck on a tenon that will be cut away later. Wood can be screwed or glued to a faceplate, a strong disk threaded to the spindle, which lets the turner work without tailstock support. That firm grip matters for hollowing bowls and hollow vessels. Tools themselves are made from carbon steel, high-speed steel, often called HSS, and more recently tungsten carbide, sometimes with titanium nitride coating to resist wear. High-speed steel holds an edge longer than carbon steel but not as long as carbide, whose inserts are sold as disposable yet can be honed with diamond abrasives. Turning edges need frequent sharpening because stock passes fast. Makers use powered wheels and abrasives, by eye or with jigs that hold the bevel. Heat is the danger. Carbon steel turns blue easily and must be cooled in water or oil or it softens, so the blued part has to be ground off and the bevel and edge remade. High-speed steel resists that overheating better. Common gouges include the wide-fluted spindle roughing gouge for rounding and rough shaping, unsafe for end grain, bowls and faceplate work because of its heavy cut and weaker tang; the shallow-fluted spindle or detail gouge for beads and coves; and the deep-fluted bowl gouge with thicker shaft and longer handle for reaching inside and outside bowls and vessels. Look for those profiles in tool rolls beside turned bowls when you walk the craft row in the Belgrade Lakes Market Vendors Farms Food and Crafts listings, then ask to hold an unfinished handle blank and feel where the bevel would ride.
